Traditional Intra-gastric Balloon

Intra-gastric Balloon and its function

The intra-gastric balloon is an endoscopic treatment to fight obesity. This methodology consists on the emplacement of a rounded silicone prothesis, filled with water  and blue methylene that is inserted in the stomach of the patient. The prothesis support a volume from 400 to 700 ml, with an established volume according to the need identified to each patient.

The procedure of the intra-gastric balloon is not surgical, therefore, it doesn’t require anesthesia or cuts.  The prothesis is placed and removed by means of endoscopy with easy recovering and immediate discharge.

The action process

  • The balloon takes over 70% of the stomach volume, reducing considerably the available space for liquid and solid food inside the organ.
  • The balloon gives a sensation of satiety for a greater time, because it is located at the bottom of the stomach causing a dilation of the organ. This movement stimulates the receptors that transmit the satiety sensation to the brain, causing the “ballooning” (definition given to the patients who have a balloon) feel as if they had just finished eaten, satiated, not hungry.
  • The balloon delays the gastric emptiness, because it reduces the pace of food passage from the stomach to the intestine. The food remains longer in the stomach, causing a sensation of satiety for more time.

With the intra-gastric balloon the sensation of being hungry is reduced and the satiety increased. With this methodology, the ingestion of small quantity of food is enough to satisfy the user  and the satiety sensation is extended.

Application and duration of the treatment

The treatment applies to overweight patients (BMI above 27) or obese ones (BMI above 30), with or without diseases related to the excess of weight and who have already been through several unsuccessful clinical treatment to lose weight.

The treatment is also indicated to obese people who will submit some sort of surgery, because the balloon helps to lose weight and consequently, reduces considerably the risk of surgery.

The duration of the treatment is from six to nine months, depending on the prothesis utilized.

After this time, it should be removed. Therefore, this time is variable and it can be shorter than, in case the patient can reach the goal established with the doctor before the maximum time frame of utilization of the prothesis.

After removing the prothesis, it is advised that the treatment continues for at least one extra year with the follow up of our multi-disciplinary team.

What type of anesthesia is used on the procedure?

The type of anesthesia utilized is sedation. As it is an endoscopic treatment, there is not need for a more complex anesthesia. For that matter, the treatment offers the lowest risk!

Is it a permanent treatment?

The treatment is permanent provided that there is awareness of the patient and a real change of food consumption habits and the life style. The food re-education and the practice of physical activities on a daily basis are essential for the successful results of the balloon.

Which are the advantages of the treatment with the balloon ?

Among the several advantages offered by the methodology, they are:

– It is a temporary methodology and it offers the lowest cost, once it isn’t invasive. Common problems related to surgical procedures such as, complications with anesthesia, cuts, scars or infection risks, hemorrhages and hospital infection are nullified with the use of the Intra-gastric Balloon. For that matter, the complication index is the lowest and the recovery is extremely fast.

– During the treatment period the patient develops new food habits; better and healthier ones. After removing of the balloon, these new habits (food re-education) will be essential so the patient maintain a  healthy nourishing habit and remains with the good results achieved.

– The methodology promotes the physiologic, natural weight loss, without the use of medicine and their malign side effects broadly discussed on the media.

– The ideal methodology for patients who are overweight, but have not been indicated or don’t wish to undergo a surgery and a more invasive proceeding.

What is the risk of bursting the balloon?

The balloon won’t burst. There is a minimum risk of the liquid leak outside of the balloon. This liquid has a blue coloration that will not cause damage to the health of the patient and it actually serves the purpose of signalizing leaking problems. Thus, the patient will notice that the color of urine and/or feces will be altered, presenting a blue color.

In case it happens, the patient should get in touch with the doctor immediately, so that the balloon can be removed and another balloon can be re-installed. However, the occurrences of leak are quite low and the chances are very remote for such problems occur.

What is the estimation of weight loss?

The ballooned patient loses an average of 20% of the initial weight, maybe more (provided that the instructions are strictly followed) or less (in case the instructions are not followed). Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that the commitment of the patient with the process, by means of food re-education and the practice of physical activities is essential so that the established goals can be reached.  The weight loss is directly proportional to the commitment of the patient for the treatment.

Which are the possible complications?

The treatment is very safe and serious complications hardly ever occur. Nausea and vomiting are the main complications. However, after three to five days of placing the balloon, the organism has already adapted and the nausea tend to disappear. After this period, medication can be interrupted.
